Plot summary
John Forbes is an insurance adjuster in Los Angeles, married to Sue and the father of Tommy, and he finds both his job and his home routine dull. Bill Smiley has been jailed for embezzlement, and the agency is liable for what he spent. J.B. MacDonald, a private investigator and former policeman, reports that the money went on gifts for Smiley's girlfriend, the model Mona Stevens, and makes clear that he is attracted to her. Forbes does not trust him to keep to business, so he visits Mona at her apartment himself to recover the presents. He is drawn to her, and he says nothing about his marriage.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Pitfall's script violated the Hays Code because its adulterer was insufficiently punished, per TCM guest host Madeleine Stowe. Director André de Toth met two senior Hays Code officials and revealed he knew both were married and both had mistresses; there were no problems after that.
- Pitfall was hit with a libel suit: a one-time police officer sued the producers claiming the film was based on him.
