Plot summary
Joe Morelli, known as Dottore, arrives in the small villages of rural Sicily in 1953, offering screen tests to wannabe actors for a fee. He says he works for the big film studios in Rome, and he takes money or a favor for each test. The whole business is a fraud. Many of those he meets sit before his camera and use the occasion to speak their deepest feelings and secrets. At one of his stops he meets Beata, a young illiterate convent girl who wants to change her life, and she becomes attached to him despite his protests. Their relationship gradually turns romantic.
