Plot summary
In 17th century Spain, Don Salluste de Bazan manages the finances of King Charles II and collects the taxes himself, keeping much of the money, and the people he exploits hate him. Queen Marie-Anne de Neubourg accuses him of fathering an illegitimate child, and he loses his post and is sent to a monastery. He wants revenge, and he first approaches his nephew Caesar, who has become a brigand and refuses him. Don Salluste then turns to Blaze, the valet he has just dismissed, who is in love with the queen, and plans to present him at court as Caesar so that he can compromise her.
