Biography

Karl-Otto Alberty was a German actor who, after a spell as an amateur boxer, made his stage debut in 1959 at the City Theatre in Konstanz and moved into films soon after. Born Karl-Otto Poensgen in Berlin, he was sometimes credited as Charles Albert or Carlo Alberti. His first English-language part cast him as an SD officer in The Great Escape (1963), and his broad face, broken nose and white-blond hair led to a run of German officer roles in Battle of the Bulge (1965), The Devil's Brigade (1968), The Damned (1969), Battle of Britain (1969) and Kelly's Heroes (1970). He worked in Germany and Italy across dramas, comedies and spaghetti westerns, and appeared regularly on German television, his last screen credit coming in the series War and Remembrance in 1989.
