Plot summary
Ferdinando Cefalù, a nobleman of 37, lives in the Sicilian town of Agramonte with Rosalia, his wife of twelve years, whom he no longer loves. The woman he wants is Angela, his cousin of sixteen, who is away at Catholic school in the city for most of the year. A chance encounter during a family trip shows that she returns his feelings. Because divorce is illegal in Italy, Ferdinando toys with fantasies of killing Rosalia, and after hearing of a local wife who killed her husband in jealousy he resolves to maneuver his wife into an affair, catch the pair, and plead an honor killing. The lover he chooses is Carmelo Patanè, a painter and the priest's godson who has long admired Rosalia; restoring the palace frescoes is the excuse that brings him into the house.
