Plot summary
Rannulph Junuh is Savannah's favorite son, a wealthy young golfer with a beautiful girlfriend, Adele Invergordon. He goes to Europe as a U.S. Army captain in World War I, loses his company in battle, and comes home years later a broken alcoholic, his swing gone. Adele, meanwhile, hopes to rebuild the family fortune with a four-round match at the course her father built. Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen, the era's two finest players, are to compete for a $10,000 prize. The town wants a local golfer in the field, and young Hardy Greaves speaks up for Junuh, so Adele asks the man she once loved. Junuh cannot find his game again until a mysterious traveler carrying a suitcase, Bagger Vance, offers to caddy for him.

- The plot is loosely based on the Hindu sacred text the Bhagavad Gita, part of the epic Mahabharata, in which the warrior Arjuna, here R. Junuh, refuses to fight and the god Krishna appears as Bhagavan, or Bagger Vance, to help him follow his path.
- Spike Lee later cited the film as an example of a film with a Magical Negro, saying that "Blacks are getting lynched left and right, and [Bagger Vance is] more concerned about improving Matt Damon's golf swing!"
- The final hole seen in the film was not a real one: it was temporary, built so that the filming did not interfere with the club activities, and it cost US$200,000.
- The Legend of Bagger Vance proved an expensive failure: it was a box office bomb, grossing $39.5 million against an $80 million budget.
