Plot summary

Maggie Dawson, a schoolteacher, is discovered in her parked car in a parking lot during the day, and Police Chief Lee Tucker takes the case. The scene yields nothing that points to whoever killed her. Franklin Wills, a factory worker who presents himself as a clairvoyant, comes to Tucker offering assistance. He goes into trances and describes the killing as it happened, and what he reports matches details that only the person responsible could have known. Tucker, skeptical from the start, cannot dismiss the accuracy of what he hears, and he weighs whether Wills has a genuine gift or some other reason for stepping forward.
