Plot summary
The Back Bay Mainline is a Boston underground paper that came to prominence in the 1960s, and by the 1970s its staff is struggling to keep it afloat. Harry, the lead reporter, has grown disillusioned with the job, and Abbie, a photographer, is his on-and-off partner. Lynn, the office administrator, keeps the place running, while Max writes about music, Frank edits, and Stanley sells advertising. Michael, a writer, plans to leave for New York on the proceeds of a book, and Laura, a founding reporter, lives with him. David, a cub reporter who bikes to work, wants to prove himself. Word spreads that a communications empire may buy the paper, a prospect the staff dreads.
