Plot summary
Gordon Bombay wins his thirtieth case as a Minneapolis defense attorney, and his boss, Gerald Ducksworth, criticizes his courtroom behavior. Bombay celebrates by drinking, drives, and is arrested. Ducksworth arranges for the charge to be suspended if Bombay coaches the District 5 peewee hockey team as 500 hours of community service. Bombay's own youth hockey past is troubled: playing for the Hawks in 1973, he missed a penalty shot that decided the game, and his coach, Jack Reilly, was disappointed in him. The District 5 players have little equipment, no practice rink and no skill, and their first game against Reilly's Hawks ends in a 17-0 defeat. Bombay scolds the players and shows them how to feign injuries to win penalties, a tactic that only deepens the tension. Charlie Conway stands up to him.
