Plot summary
Brick, Al, Ronnie and Roy, students at Midwestern University, spend a weekend at Harold's Club in Reno, where Ronnie goes broke. At the cashier's window a would-be robber threatens the cashier with a gun, and security mistakes Ronnie and Roy for his accomplices until Al talks them free. Ronnie overhears an officer boast that Harold's cannot be robbed, and the challenge sticks with him even though his family is wealthy. Back at school he works out a plan and buys a trailer, a car and a cart built to match the casino's cash carts, then brings in Brick and Roy; the three agree Al should not be told. Al wants to marry his girlfriend Kay, a nightclub singer, who is hesitant, and Brick, a Korean War veteran, is struggling, with Al urging him to return to a veterans' hospital.

- The film was first set up at United Artists with Frank Tashlin directing and Mary Costa starring, but the deal collapsed. Columbia then planned it with Peter Godfrey directing and Milly Vitale starring; when Vitale, Roddy McDowall and Robert Horton withdrew, Columbia contract players Kim Novak and Kerwin Mathews took their parts.
- Kim Novak's role in the film was one of her earliest screen appearances; she was among the last actors signed under the old studio system, and Columbia's Harry Cohn insisted on casting her.
- Stirling Silliphant optioned Jack Finney's novel himself, paying for the rights with the proceeds from selling the rights to his own novel Maracaibo.
