Doro Merande
Biography
Doro Merande was an American actress who performed on stage, in films, and on television. Born in Columbus, Kansas, she got her start with a summer company in Massachusetts and the Jules Levanthal Company. In the 1920s she acted on Broadway under her birth name, then took the stage name Doro Merande for Loose Moments in 1935, playing Sophie Tuttle. A string of plays followed, including One Good Year and Red Harvest. Her breakthrough part came as the gossip in Thornton Wilder's Our Town, and she repeated that role in the 1940 film. She shared Broadway productions with Leo G. Carroll, Betty Field, Jose Ferrer, Clifton Webb, and Walter Huston. In 1969 she returned to Broadway for a revival of The Front Page as the cleaning woman, a part she played again in a 1970 television version and a 1974 film, her last appearance. Billy Wilder directed her in Kiss Me, Stupid (1964) and, earlier, The Seven Year Itch (1955).
