Plot summary
Carly Hardwicke, a young American in London, lets a room in her Mayfair townhouse to William Gridley, a junior diplomat at the American Embassy. She says she is separated from her husband Miles and does not know where he is. When Gridley mentions her name to his superior, Franklyn Ambruster, Ambruster has it checked, and the answer comes back that Carly is suspected of killing Miles. With no body found, she cannot be prosecuted, and Inspector Oliphant of Scotland Yard says she recently filed a claim on Miles' life insurance. Convinced of her innocence, Gridley agrees to keep watch on her for the police.
