Plot summary
Larry Coe, married to Eve and the father of two, works as an architect in Los Angeles. The buildings he designs are commercial, and he wishes his work could be more original. He talks with Roger Altar, an author, about building a house that would be an experiment. Maggie Gault lives nearby, and her son is friends with Larry's children. She has seen houses he has built and tells him the unconventional ones are the best, the encouragement he does not get from his practical wife. Larry and Maggie are both unhappy in their marriages, and Maggie's husband shows no desire for her. The two begin an affair, meeting in secret, knowing it is wrong, and both of them are devoted to their children.

- Because the film's story unfolds over the course of construction, contractors had to align their schedule with the film crew's, and the house was valued at $250,000 when completed in 1960.
