Plot summary
Thirty years after a shooting in an Elderstown, Illinois department store, Nick Kaminsky, a professor of architecture from upstate New York, arrives in town to be with Lillian, the birth mother who gave him up for adoption and whom he has never met; her illness is in its final days. A building across from his hotel draws his attention, and he finds that his college friend Paul Kessler is demolishing it, the ornate cast-iron Ralston store, which Nick argues is an architectural landmark worth saving. Paul's wife Jane is a photographer interested in the same building. Nick meets Dr. Parker, who oversees Lillian's care, and Parker's wife Mary, a nurse at the hospital. With Paul away in Chicago, Nick and Jane explore the store together over several days.
