Plot summary
Nina and Robert Tracey have been married for eight years, and their disagreements end in divorce, and each sets out on a separate life. Robert moves in with Charlie Nelson, a Navy buddy of his who has a way with women, while Nina turns to her mother, Edith Chapman, for advice. Robert has an evening out with Janis, who finds him real cute, though he feels uneasy with her and with the other girls he takes out. Nina goes out with other men as well. When the two of them run into each other by accident, each tries to ignore the other.

- George Axelrod said he and others were fighting the director and the censors, and that the seduction scene between Judy Holliday and Jack Carson was cut so heavily that the censorship destroyed it and it wasn't even funny.
- The original plan was to borrow Sheree North from 20th Century Fox to play Janis, but Harry Cohn decided to use Kim Novak in the part after seeing her in Pushover.
- George Axelrod called off his play, the source of Phffft, while divorcing his first wife, saying it was too ugly and he wanted to get out of town even though the money had been raised; the day it was announced, Columbia's Harry Cohn called to say it would make a great movie for Judy Holliday.
- Jack Lemmon left the set during filming when his first wife, the actress and model Cynthia Stone, gave birth to their son, Chris Lemmon.
