June Lockhart

Biography

June Lockhart was an American actress whose career began in films in the 1930s and lasted nearly 90 years. Born in New York City in 1925 to the actors Gene and Kathleen Lockhart, she made her film debut with them in A Christmas Carol (1938). She went on to supporting roles in All This, and Heaven Too (1940), Sergeant York (1941), Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) and The Yearling (1946), and was top-billed in She-Wolf of London (1946). On stage she debuted at eight in Peter Ibbetson and won a Special Tony Award in 1948 for For Love or Money. She became best known for television mother roles, playing Ruth Martin on Lassie from 1958 to 1964 and Dr. Maureen Robinson on Lost in Space from 1965 to 1968, followed by Dr. Janet Craig on Petticoat Junction from 1968 to 1970. She was nominated for two Emmy Awards and died in 2025.

Behind the award
Lockhart's Broadway work in For Love or Money brought her a Special Tony Award in 1948, honoring a newcomer's outstanding performance in a category that no longer exists.
First role
At 8 years old, Lockhart made her stage debut as Mimsey in Peter Ibbetson, a production presented by the Metropolitan Opera.
Beyond film
In 1958, Lockhart served as narrator for a Playhouse 90 telecast of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker in George Balanchine's version. Balanchine took the role of Drosselmeyer, and the New York City Ballet also appeared.
Behind the award
In 2013, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration gave Lockhart its Exceptional Public Achievement Medal, honoring her for inspiring the public about space exploration.
