Plot summary
In England during the Second World War, Joe Carraclough is training with the Royal Air Force, and the collie Lassie and her pup Laddie are devoted to him. Sam Carraclough, Joe's father, keeps the Duke of Rudling's kennels and is given command of a training school for army war dogs on the Duke's Yorkshire estate. Lassie is considered too old for the school, but Laddie is enrolled the day before Joe reports for active duty as a flight navigator. Laddie has little of the discipline of the other dogs, though he is resourceful, and he trails Joe to the air base forty miles from home. Joe's pilot arranges for Laddie to come along when Joe flies a reconnaissance mission over occupied Norway.
