Plot summary
Harry Sr. and Anne Potter settle into a San Francisco apartment house with their son Harry Jr. and daughter Wendy. A small creature armed with a magic ring seizes ten-year-old Wendy and assumes her shape, while around the family the other tenants behave strangely and the move is blamed for Wendy's temper. Worried by his sister, Harry Jr. keeps company with Eunice St. Clair, an older resident who tells him she is a witch. She recounts a long-ago war between fairies and humans, and Torok, the wizard she once loved, who was turned into a troll as punishment and now wants his power back and the fairy world restored.

- Empire Pictures head Charles Band agreed to let John Carl Buechler direct Troll only on condition it play to a broad PG-13 audience instead of an R. Buechler reworked his slasher-style concept, in which a troll murdered the cast one by one like Friday the 13th, into one where the troll transforms the cast into plant-like creations.
- Troll 2, the first follow-up, was produced under the title Goblins and retitled to cash in on the success of Troll; it has no plot relation to the original and is considered one of the worst films of all time. It has since developed a cult following.
- Buechler tailored the Troll script specifically for dwarf actor Phil Fondacaro, who played a dual role: the titular troll and one of the film's lead characters.
