Plot summary

Whip Hoxworth is a sea captain who brings the Corinthian into Oahu with Chinese laborers in its hold. He intends to give up the sea for the family shipping fleet, but his grandfather has died and the fortune goes to his cousin Malama and her husband, Micah Hale. Whip receives a barren estate at Hanakai. Among the immigrants is Bong Nyuk Tsin, a young Hakka woman found in the all-male passage, whom Mun Ki claims as his wife. At the dock, Mun Ki argues with a brothel owner over her, and Purity, Whip's wife, suggests the estate hire them.
