John Cassavetes
Biography
John Cassavetes was a Greek-American actor and filmmaker who helped pioneer modern American independent cinema, often financing, producing, and distributing his own movies. Born in New York City, he trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and found early work in television drama before appearing in films such as Edge of the City (1957), The Dirty Dozen (1967), which brought him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and Rosemary's Baby (1968). He also acted in The Killers (1964), Mikey and Nicky (1976), The Fury (1978), and Tempest (1982). As a director he became known for independent dramas including Shadows (1960), Husbands (1970), Minnie and Moskowitz (1971), A Woman Under the Influence (1974), which earned him a Best Director nomination, Opening Night (1977), and Love Streams (1984). Faces brought an Academy Award nomination for its screenplay, and Shadows, Faces, and A Woman Under the Influence were later added to the National Film Registry.
