Peter Sandza and his son Robin, a boy with psychic abilities, meet Ben Childress, Peter's former colleague from the agency, while the two are in Israel. Peter intends to leave his old life and return with Robin to the United States, but Childress stages an attack and has the boy kidnapped. Peter escapes, wounded, and spends the following months looking for his son. In Chicago, high school student Gillian Bellaver discovers during an in-class demonstration that her psychic powers, telekinesis and extra-sensory perception among them, flare up and injure people who touch or provoke her. SPOILER
Brian De Palma said he had 8 or 9 high-speed cameras filming John Cassavetes exploding in the conclusion. The first attempt failed: the body parts did not go towards the right cameras, the whole set was covered with blood, and it took almost a week to get back to take two.
