Plot summary
Phillip Dimitrius is a successful New York City architect who, in middle age, is dissatisfied with both his marriage and his work. When he discovers that his wife Antonia is involved with his boss, Alonzo, he takes his teenage daughter Miranda from New York to Greece. In Athens, Phillip meets a singer named Aretha Tomalin, and the two become lovers. Alonzo and Antonia also arrive in Greece, so Phillip, Aretha and Miranda move to a remote Greek island. There Phillip takes a vow of celibacy, and the three encounter Kalibanos, an eccentric hermit who had previously been the island's only resident.
