Plot summary
Robert Harmon is a writer whose days are made of alcohol, cigarettes and brief affairs with women. He keeps a tenuous relationship with Susan, a singer, and avoids real emotional commitment to anyone. Robert has not seen his son since the boy was born, until his ex-wife arrives and leaves their eight-year-old with him for a day. His sister Sarah Lawson is in the middle of a divorce; her husband and daughter have had enough of her emotional upheavals, and Debbie has chosen to stay with her father. Sarah visits Robert, and most of the story plays out in his house.

- The visual style of the film is decidedly different from Cassavetes's other works: it contains no hand-held camera work, a trademark of his visual style, and much of it was shot inside Cassavetes' home.
- A videotape version briefly available in the mid 1980s was cut to 122 minutes by the distributor: one scene was edited and several unusual visual effects, the insertion of black leader and jump cuts, were removed.
