Plot summary
A television special pairs the animated feature with live performances of its songs, along with numbers from the Broadway stage version. The film plays on a giant screen for an audience gathered at a dive-in theater, and each musical number gives way to performers on stage. The story centers on Ariel, a mermaid princess of Atlantica obsessed with the human world, who saves the traveling prince Eric from the sea; he remembers only her voice. Among the characters are Sebastian, a crab who serves as King Triton's advisor and court composer, and Ursula, a sea witch determined to take King Triton's place as ruler of Atlantica.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Little Mermaid Live! (2019)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Viewers complained that Shaggy's crab, Sebastian, had no crab claws during "Under the Sea" while the audience wore them for "Les Poissons"; ABC senior vice president Robert Mills said the claws were removed after dress rehearsal because they "looked ridiculous", and shared a photo of Shaggy wearing them.
- Director Hamish Hamilton explained the special was half live musical, half animated film: a live audience watched the movie in a "dive-in theater" built on the Disney lot in Burbank, with the screening cutting smoothly into live performances of each song.
