Plot summary
Philip Brainard teaches at Medfield College and works on a new energy source in his basement, hoping to keep the school open. His absorption in the research has made him miss two wedding dates with Sara Jean Reynolds, the college president. On the day of their third attempt, his former partner Wilson Croft, now at rival Rutland College, arrives; Croft has grown rich by taking Philip's ideas and now wants Sara as well. With his robot assistant Weebo, Philip's experiment produces a green, elastic substance full of kinetic energy that bounds around the neighborhood before he catches it again. Weebo calls it flying rubber, and he names it Flubber. Chester Hoenicker, the college's wealthy sponsor, sends his henchmen Smith and Wesson to press Philip about his son Bennett's grade.
