Plot summary
Mal Granger earns his living as a telephone technician in Los Angeles, where his grasp of electronics makes him useful to gangster Vince Walters, who runs an illegal bookmaking operation behind a legitimate business. Granger expands the operation and builds a better system for collecting information at racetracks. He demands a twenty percent share and threatens to walk away unless Walters agrees; Walters gives in. When Walters is killed while trying to collect from a bookie, Granger takes over the wire service and the racket. Lieutenant Pete Wright of the city police begins pursuing him. On the East Coast, Carl Stephans sends Larry Mason to bring Granger into his syndicate. Granger and Gail, Mason's wife, are drawn to each other.
