Plot summary
Gwen Mayfield, a schoolteacher, comes back to England after a nervous breakdown caused by witch-doctors who attacked her at a mission in Africa. Alan Bax, a wealthy reverend who runs a school in Heddaby, hires her to teach there, and she hopes the quiet will help her recover. She finds that Alan, who is not really a minister, wears a clerical collar only to feel secure, and that the only church in the village lies in ruins. Alan's sister Stephanie is an esteemed journalist, and Gwen befriends her. Ronnie Dowsett and Linda Rigg, two of Gwen's pupils, are in love, and the grown-ups of Heddaby sternly oppose it for reasons she cannot grasp. Linda lives with her grandmother, Granny Rigg, rumored to be a witch, and Ronnie fears the old woman is mistreating her.
