Plot summary
Harry Graham and his wife Eve own a freezer business in San Francisco, where Harry handles the sales trips that take him often to Los Angeles. Eve cannot have children, and the couple has decided to adopt; Mr. Jordan, the agency's representative, tells them he has reached the background check. Something in Harry's face at that news prompts Mr. Jordan to look into the travel records, and the hotels in Los Angeles have no Harry Graham registered. Harry, confronted at the address he keeps in that city, does not deny the second household: a wife named Phyllis, and their baby son David. He tells Mr. Jordan how the two marriages came about.
