Plot summary
Charles leaves the provinces for Paris, where he moves into his uncle's grand apartment alongside his cousin Paul. Both young men are enrolled in law school, but only Charles studies, and he writes to his mother daily so as not to disappoint her. Paul spends his days at the café where his friends gather and at parties. It is at that café that Charles meets Florence, who has a reputation for promiscuity and whose past Charles knows nothing about. He falls in love with her. Clovis, a corrupt friend of Paul's who works as a hustler and deals in bizarre entertainments, is a regular at the flat.
