Plot summary
In 1791, during the French Revolution, the novelist Restif de la Bretonne learns from a palace maid that Louis XVI may try to leave Paris. Eager to see the king's flight, he asks to travel in a coach bound for Metz, but the passengers turn him away. Aboard are the American patriot Thomas Paine, Countess Sophie de la Borde, the industrialist De Wendel, the opera singer Virginia Capacelli, the widow Madame Adélaïde Gagnon and the hairdresser Monsieur Jacob. Restif catches up with them on horseback. At Meaux the travelers hear the king may have left Paris at midnight, and Paine charts a route to Montmédy near the Luxembourg border. On the road they take in Giacomo Casanova, stranded and destitute, whose reputation is known to everyone in the coach.
