Plot summary
Charlotte Castang, thirteen, lost her mother at birth. She lives near a nightclub with her widowed father, her brother Jacky and the family's maid, Léone. Her only friend is Lulu, a sick ten-year-old whose mother works the late shift at a hospital, and Charlotte finds her a pest. During a swimming lesson she botches a dive and scrapes her knee. The nurse checks it, and through the amphitheatre doorway Charlotte glimpses a rehearsal tape of Clara Bauman, a pianist her own age; a teacher lets her in, since the day is the last before the summer holiday. Charlotte finds Clara sophisticated and wants her as a friend. The next day, walking with Lulu, a car stops for help in finding a metalworker, and Clara sits beside the driver. Charlotte agrees to show the way.
