Plot summary
Héléna Bourdelle, called La Bourdelle, sings opera to audiences around the world; her husband André is a maestro and leads a Resistance cell. Their Paris household holds their grown children Bernadette, Colette and Guy-Hubert, Michel Taupin, their tenant, and André's father, whom they call Gramps. Once Germany occupies France, the occupation authorities take the mansion for General Hermann Spontz, brought in from the Eastern Front, and the family is left in the cellar. At the Kommandantur, where they protest the general's excesses, Héléna, Bernadette and Michel come across a British airman and hide him in the cellar. Michel courts Bernadette without luck and keeps trying to join the Resistance.
