Plot summary
Anne Goupil is a literature student in Paris. Through her brother Pierre she meets a circle of friends troubled by the recent death of Juan, an anti-Franco refugee and musician, from a knife wound that some of them call a suicide. At a party the American Philip, drunk, slaps Terry Yordan and blames her for Juan's death; Terry is now with the theater director Gérard Lenz. A friend takes Anne to a rehearsal of Pericles, which Gérard is directing, and she reads the part of Marina when the actress does not arrive. Philip then speaks to her in veiled hints of an ominous group he says destroyed Juan and could destroy Gérard too. Gérard planned to use a recording by Juan in the production, but the recording is missing, and Anne starts asking questions about the people around her.
