Plot summary
Shortly before his wedding, Jérôme leaves Stockholm for the shore of Lake Annecy, where he intends to sell his family's vacation house. There he runs into Aurora, a novelist he counts as an old friend and has not met for years. She is lodging with Madame Walter and Madame Walter's teenage daughter Laura, and when Aurora sees that Laura is drawn to Jérôme, she urges him to keep the girl company so that she can watch and perhaps gather material for her writing. Jérôme answers that his fiancée is the only woman he cares for, but he agrees. Laura's ex-step-sister Claire then arrives for a visit, and Jérôme finds himself drawn to her, his thoughts fixed on touching her knee.
