Biography

Gilbert Gottfried was a comedian and actor from the United States whose career moved between stand-up, film and voice work, marked by an exaggerated voice and an edgy sense of humor. He gave his first stage comedy routine at 15 at the Bitter End in Greenwich Village, doing impressions of old-time actors and celebrities, and later became known on the local circuit as a comedian's comedian. In 1980 he was hired for the sixth season of Saturday Night Live, where he rarely appeared in sketches. His film and voice roles included Sidney Bernstein in Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), Igor Peabody in Problem Child (1990) and Problem Child 2 (1991), and Iago in Aladdin (1992), The Return of Jafar (1994) and Aladdin and the King of Thieves (1996). He also voiced Berkeley Beetle in Thumbelina (1994), Digit on Cyberchase and the Aflac duck, and hosted Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Colossal Podcast from 2014. He died in 2022.
