Plot summary
Below-average grades leave Jeff Marx with no place at an American medical school, though he aims to become a physician. His father, Dr. Gerald Marx, sends him to a medical school in a small Central American dictatorship instead, and the school seems far below the standard of the ones that turned him down. There he joins other American students, among them Liz Parker, and struggles with exams, the language barrier and the effects of pep pills. The country is governed by Dr. Ramon Madera, who also serves as the school's authoritarian dean and takes a close interest in how the students behave.
