Plot summary
Princess Jasmine is tired of her sheltered life in the palace, where by law she must marry a prince, so she escapes in disguise and meets Aladdin in the marketplace. Aladdin gets by on the streets of Agrabah, stealing bread with his pet monkey Abu; when he rescues Jasmine from an altercation there, a bond forms between them. Jafar, the Sultan's sorcerer vizier, wants a magic lamp hidden in the Cave of Wonders, which legend says opens for one person alone, a diamond in the rough. He has the palace guards seize Aladdin and orders the street urchin to bring the lamp out of the cave.

- The directors asked Eric Goldberg, the Genie's supervising animator, to animate the character over one of Robin Williams's old stand-up routines as a pitch. The test, which turned Williams's routine about schizophrenia into the Genie growing another head to argue with himself, made him "laugh his ass off" and convinced him to sign.
- Disney tried to make amends with Robin Williams by sending him a Pablo Picasso painting worth more than $1 million, but it failed to repair the damaged relationship: the painting was a self-portrait of Picasso as Vincent van Gogh, and it apparently really clashed with the Williams's wilder home decor.
- A verse of the opening song "Arabian Nights" described the singer's homeland as a place "where they cut off your ear if they don't like your face". After complaints from the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee it was altered to "where it's flat and immense and the heat is intense".
- Aladdin's design changed during production. He was initially going to be as young as thirteen and was made to resemble Michael J. Fox, but the design was judged too boyish, so the character was made "seventeen to eighteen" and redesigned with elements derived from Tom Cruise and Calvin Klein models.
- Unusually for an animated film, much of Robin Williams's dialogue as the Genie was ad-libbed. For some scenes he was given topics and dialogue suggestions but allowed to improvise his lines, and it is estimated that he improvised 52 characters.
- For his audition Weinger sent in a homemade tape as Aladdin, with his mother playing the Genie. After several callbacks he found out six months later that he had been cast as the title character.
- Katzenberg asked Clements and Musker not to lean heavily on Ashman's vision, and called for the removal of Aladdin's mother from the story, remarking: "Eighty-six the mother. The mom's a zero."
