Plot summary
Owen Suskind had a lot to say as a small boy, and then, at three, he stopped speaking and retreated into autism. Almost four years passed, and his parents could find no way to reach him. His father tried an animated movie's voice: holding up a parrot puppet, he asked Owen what it was like to be him, and Owen answered with a line from the film. From then on the animated features he loved gave him a way to understand the world and a language for his own feelings. He began to make up stories of his own about the characters he cared about.
