Plot summary
Spring break brings tens of thousands of visitors to Lake Victoria, Arizona, and the town counts on the crowds. When a fisherman goes missing, Sheriff Julie Forester and Deputy Fallon find his body in the water. A tremor has torn open the lake floor, and a fish they capture is identified by the retired marine biologist Carl Goodman as a prehistoric piranha. Julie tries to close the lake and warn the tourists, but the party continues. Her son Jake is aboard a yacht with Derrick Jones, who is shooting a film on the water, and Kelly, Jake's old crush, is there with her boyfriend Todd Dupree. Jake's young siblings, Zane and Laura, are stranded on a sandbar island.

- Richard Dreyfuss said he accepted the role after Bob Weinstein persuaded him by offering a larger salary, which Dreyfuss later donated to charity, and that the character he plays is a parody and near-reincarnation of Matt Hooper, the part he played in Jaws.
- Shooting took place in May 2009 at Bridgewater Channel in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, where the water was dyed red, and an estimated 80,000 gallons of fake blood were used during filming.
- Citing the constraints of 3D camera rigs shooting on water, senior vice-president of post-production Jeff Maynard decided to shoot Piranha in 2D and convert it afterwards. The decision saved the company millions of dollars, and the result was one of the first post-conversions to be well received by critics.
- A San Diego Comic-Con panel set for 24 July 2010 was canceled after convention organisers decided the footage planned for it was inappropriate, and nine minutes of footage, with some unfinished effects, then leaked onto websites.
- By June 2005 Chuck Russell was scheduled to direct a very different version of the film, an estimated $23 million picture described as an "underwater thriller", as opposed to the Stolberg and Goldfinger draft that took place during spring break.
- Asked about her underwater sequence with Riley Steele, Kelly Brook said it was really difficult and that she had to learn to hold her breath for a very long time, adding that the pair had to have "a lot of practice" before filming the scene.
