Plot summary
SS colonel Hans Landa presses a French dairy farmer into giving up the Jewish Dreyfus family hiding under his floor. The youngest, Shosanna, gets away, and years later lives in Paris as Emmanuelle Mimieux, running a cinema. Lieutenant Aldo Raine, meanwhile, recruits Jewish American soldiers into a commando unit, the Basterds, to kill and scalp Germans in occupied France; each man is to bring him a hundred scalps, and Raine carves a swastika into the Germans he lets go. The German sniper Fredrick Zoller, star of the propaganda film Nation's Pride, persuades Joseph Goebbels to hold its premiere at Shosanna's cinema, with Landa as head of security. British lieutenant Archie Hicox is briefed for Operation Kino, a strike on that premiere, and is to rendezvous with the Basterds and the actress Bridget von Hammersmark.

For the scene in which Diane Kruger's Bridget von Hammersmark is strangled, Quentin Tarantino said he personally strangled the actress with his own bare hands, in one take, to aid authenticity.- Eli Roth said the cast and crew "almost got incinerated" during the theater fire scene, because the fire burned at 1,200 C instead of the projected 400 C, and the steel cables holding a swastika prop softened and snapped.
- Quentin Tarantino first sought Leonardo DiCaprio for Hans Landa, then decided the character should be played by a native German speaker; the part went to Austrian Christoph Waltz, who Tarantino said "gave me my movie".
- Tarantino asked Adam Sandler to play Donny Donowitz, but Sandler turned it down because of schedule conflicts with the film Funny People (2009), and Eli Roth was cast in the role instead.
- Tarantino wanted Simon Pegg as Lieutenant Archie Hicox, but Pegg dropped out over scheduling conflicts with The Adventures of Tintin (2011); Michael Fassbender took the part, having originally auditioned for Hans Landa.
- Rod Taylor came out of retirement, with no agent, to play Winston Churchill for Tarantino, watching dozens of DVDs of Churchill to copy his posture, body language and lisp; it was his last film appearance before his death in 2015.
- After finishing Kill Bill, Tarantino considered turning Inglourious Basterds into a mini-series, but Luc Besson convinced him to finish it as a film, so he trimmed the script using Pulp Fiction as a guide to length.
- Because German and Austrian law restricts Nazi iconography, Universal removed the swastika from the title's typography in publicity and put a bullet hole in the steel helmet instead; the film itself was not censored, as works of art are exempt.
