Edward Platt
Biography
Edward Platt was an American actor whose deep voice and mature presence suited an eclectic range of parts. Born on Staten Island, New York, he trained as an operatic bass-baritone at Juilliard and sang with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra before turning to acting. He made his Broadway debut in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Allegro, and José Ferrer helped him secure his first screen role in the 1955 film version of The Shrike. That same year he appeared in Rebel Without a Cause (1955), and he later had roles in Designing Woman (1957) and North by Northwest (1959), among other films. On television he became widely known as the Chief in Get Smart, which ran from 1965 to 1970, and he had a recurring part in The Governor & J.J. in 1970. In 1973 he produced the independent feature Santee. He died in 1974.
