Plot summary
Lee Hackett helped build the territory and is still one of its most powerful and respected ranchers, willing to do anything to protect the Hackett name. His two grown sons are opposites. Ed, the older and favored one, must come out on top in any encounter, often by violence, respects only himself, and holds Indians in contempt. Davy, the younger, believes times have changed: he rarely carries a gun, avoids settling matters with violence, and counts Indians as fellow citizens. The brothers meet Clee Chouard, half French, half Sioux; Ed's advances toward her are unwanted, and Davy apologizes for him. Clee's brother Paul and two other Indians join the family's horse roundup, and Ed resents Paul's skill. Ed is set on catching an elusive white mare, and Paul competes for it.
