Plot summary
Michael Reston, a wealthy man staying at a California resort, reads his wife Charleen's tattered dress as proof of an affair. He pulls her into a convertible and makes her show him the way to her lover, Larry Bell, a bartender, then shoots him on the sidewalk. Michael hires James Gordon Blane, a costly New York defense lawyer. Blane leaves his wife Diane and their two young sons and, on the train, talks with Ralph Adams, a reporter assigned to the case. In Desert View, Nevada, the townspeople treat Blane with suspicion, and Sheriff Nick Hoak is unfriendly. Blane's marriage to Diane exists in name only.
