Trailer

Plot summary

On her wedding day in St. Louis, Lutie Cameron receives a telegram from the rancher Col. Jim Brewton telling her to board a train for Salt Fork, New Mexico, to marry him. In town she meets Brice Chamberlain, who warns her that the locals consider Brewton a tyrant. Brewton runs his cattle on government land, the Sea of Grass, and opposes homesteaders because he believes the plains get too little rain for farming. Chamberlain and other locals disagree. Far from town, Lutie grows lonely and is unsure whether she shares her husband's beliefs.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Sea of Grass (1947)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Elia Kazan had looked forward to filming The Sea of Grass on the Great Plains, but MGM decided most of the movie would be shot against a process screen using existing "sea of grass" stock footage rather than sending the crew on location.
  • The prairie backdrop shown on the process screen was shot in the Sandhills of Nebraska on the ranch of former Nebraska Governor Samuel McKelvie, and the land later became part of the McKelvie National Forest, an irony for a story set in New Mexico.
  • The role of Lutie Cameron was originally planned for Myrna Loy before the part went to Katharine Hepburn.
