Plot summary
Pat Jamieson is a scientist whose government-backed project is an oxygen mask for pilots flying at high altitude, and he has no private place to carry out the work. Jamie Rowan, a widow in wartime Washington, owns a house she does not use, complete with a basement suited to a laboratory. She has given up on marrying for love, and so has he. Jamie likes the scientist and his dog and wants to help the war effort, so the two of them strike a bargain: a marriage of convenience and a shared partnership. They settle into the house and spend their days on oxygen mixes rather than a honeymoon. Pat has known love at its worst, Jamie at its best, and both are sure a marriage without it escapes jealousy and quarreling.

- Lucille Ball broke a toe doing a dance number during filming. She was playing Kitty Trimble, the part Audrey Christie had taken in Philip Barry's original stage play, which opened on Broadway at the St. James Theatre in 1942.
- Barry wrote the part expressly for Hepburn, as he had previously done with The Philadelphia Story, a major Broadway hit that she turned into her 1940 comeback film, also starring Cary Grant and James Stewart.
- Lucille Ball turned to this film's cinematographer, Karl Freund, six years later in her struggle to launch a filmed television show, something unheard of at the time.
