Plot summary
Adam Lemp, a widower who plays the flute, heads a household of four musical daughters. Emma, the eldest, plays the harp and turns away the neighbor Ernest; Thea plays piano and is courted by Ben Crowley; Kay sings and could win a scholarship to a music school, though she would rather stay home; Ann, the youngest, plays the violin. Into this house comes Felix Deitz, a young composer with a letter of introduction to Adam, who works as a dean at a foundation. All four sisters are drawn to him, and he moves in with the family, winning over Aunt Etta as well. Felix hopes his latest composition will take a prize. Then his friend Mickey Borden, a cynical arranger, arrives.

- Errol Flynn was originally cast as Felix Deitz in Four Daughters but dropped out because of illness, according to contemporary sources; TCM reported he was actually unhappy with the size of the part.
