Plot summary
Aztec ruins near San Juan, New Mexico, stand where the feathered serpent Quetzalcoatl has guarded the treasure of Montezuma for centuries. Professor Andrew Forbes, who found the treasure five years before, keeps the creature behind bars in a chamber inside the mountain and pulls a feather from it, aware that the serpent will come for whoever holds it. A feather reaches Dr. John Lambert, who recognizes it as the plumage of the legendary bird and keeps it. Radio commentator Richard Thorpe flies west to report on the case in daily broadcasts and promises to solve it, and Mary Forbes tells her father that Thorpe needs only one small clue.
