Biography

Diego Luna, who was born in Toluca and grew up in Mexico City, is a Mexican actor, director, and producer who started in Mexican telenovelas as a child and broke through in Y tu mamá también (2001). He went on to appear in Frida (2002), Open Range (2003), The Terminal (2004), Milk (2008), and Rudo y Cursi (2008). In the 2010s he acted in Elysium (2013), Casa de mi Padre (2012), and The Book of Life (2014), and from 2018 to 2020 he starred as Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo in Narcos: Mexico. His role as Cassian Andor in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) and the series Andor (2022 to 2025) brought him international attention and two Golden Globe nominations. Luna has directed three features: Abel, Cesar Chavez, and Mr. Pig, and created the shows Back Home, Pan y Circo, and Everything Will Be Fine. He also produced films through Canana Films.

    Luna created, produced, directed and hosted the Amazon Prime Video talk show Pan y Circo, and in 2021 he won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Daytime Talent in a Spanish Language Program for it.

    Luna's first film as a director came in 2007, a documentary about the Mexican boxer Julio César Chávez. Abel, his first feature, a dramedy, premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

    At seven years old, Luna took part in his first play. As a child actor, he went on to appear in several telenovelas and films.

  4. A role that slipped away

    Luna was announced in 2017 to star in a Scarface remake, but the film went through rewrites and directorial changes and lost him as the lead.

  5. Behind the camera

    In 2005 Luna started the production company Canana Films with Gael Garcia Bernal, a frequent collaborator, and the producer Pablo Cruz. The company has made many Mexican films and television productions.

  6. A first

    Diego Luna voices roles in all parts of Guillermo del Toro's Tales of Arcadia franchise, which includes the series Trollhunters, 3Below, Wizards, and the movie Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans.
