A young immigrant in Paris gets by as a Michael Jackson impersonator, dancing on the streets, in parks, at tourist spots and trade shows. He does not speak French fluently. At a booking in a retirement home he meets a woman who performs as Marilyn Monroe, who asks him to come to her commune in Scotland. There she lives with her husband, who stays in character as Charlie Chaplin, and her daughter, who impersonates Shirley Temple. Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- While filming the commune scenes, the cast and crew lived together in a Scottish castle, Duncraig Castle in Plockton, and many actors stayed in their impersonated characters off-camera; Denis Lavant bathed with his shoes on, as his Charlie Chaplin was said to do.
- Harmony Korine shot the film's nun subplot with real skydiving nuns from Spain in temperatures of 48 °C (120 °F), and those scenes were filmed in Panama, as the movie's credits specify.
- The film takes its title from Bobby Vinton's song "Mr. Lonely", which is featured in the movie along with A Silver Mt. Zion's "13 Angels Standing Guard 'Round the Side of Your Bed", though neither appears on the soundtrack.
