Plot summary
A medical student consumed by questions about death, Courtney recruits classmates Jamie and Sophia for an experiment in a disused hospital room. Using defibrillation, she has her heart stopped for sixty seconds while her brain activity is recorded, and she tells them they will not be blamed for accidents. Sophia objects, but Jamie goes ahead. When Courtney cannot be revived after the minute, Ray intervenes. Marlo arrives and finds out what they are doing. Courtney describes feeling euphoric and mentally sharper. Jamie, envious, takes a turn and undergoes a disturbing near-death experience. Marlo and Sophia try it too, extending their time under. They almost get caught during Sophia's session and run from the hospital.
